How to Build a Smarter Body Grooming Routine
Trimmers, razors, exfoliation and aftercare — a straightforward system for grooming below the neck that avoids irritation, ingrown hairs and guesswork.
How to Build a Smarter Body Grooming Routine
Most men have a face routine of some sort. Below the neck, it’s usually improvisation: a hurried pass with the beard trimmer, a razor borrowed from the shower, and a week of itching afterwards. A little structure fixes all of that.
Decide what you actually want
Body grooming isn’t all-or-nothing. For most men the goal is tidy, not smooth — reducing bulk rather than removing hair entirely. Tidy looks natural, grows back without drama and takes minutes. Fully smooth needs more upkeep and invites irritation. Choose one approach per area and stick to it.
Use the right tool for the job
- A dedicated body trimmer. Wider guards, a skin-safe foil and a shape designed for awkward angles. Don’t use your beard trimmer — the blades are too aggressive for sensitive skin, and it’s unhygienic.
- A razor, only where you want smooth. A fresh cartridge or a safety razor with a new blade. Dull blades are the main cause of razor burn.
- A handheld mirror for the back of your neck and shoulders.
The routine
1. Trim dry, first
Trim hair down to a few millimetres before any shaving. Work against the direction of growth with a guard on for an even length; with the guard off, go with the grain to avoid pulling.
2. Shower and exfoliate
Warm water softens hair and opens up the skin. Use a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt two or three times a week — this is the single biggest defence against ingrown hairs.
3. Shave with the grain (if shaving)
Use a proper shave gel, not soap. Short strokes, with the grain, rinse the blade often, and don’t press. One careful pass beats three hurried ones.
4. Aftercare
Pat dry, then apply an unscented, alcohol-free moisturiser or a light body lotion. If you’re prone to bumps, a lotion with salicylic or glycolic acid keeps pores clear.
How often?
| Area | Trim | Shave |
|---|---|---|
| Chest & stomach | Every 1–2 weeks | Rarely worth it |
| Underarms | Every 2 weeks | Optional |
| Back & shoulders | Every 2–3 weeks | Only with help |
| Legs | Occasionally, if at all | Cyclists & swimmers |
Keep your kit clean
Brush out trimmer heads after every use and oil the blades once a month. Replace razor cartridges every five to seven shaves. Store both somewhere dry — a damp shower shelf dulls blades and breeds bacteria.
A routine done well takes fifteen minutes every couple of weeks. The payoff is comfort, confidence, and clothes that fit and sit better. For the top half of the picture, see our pick of short haircuts for men.
