The Best Short Haircuts for Men
Crew cut, textured crop, classic taper and more. What each cut suits, how to ask your barber for it, and how to style it at home in two minutes.
The Best Short Haircuts for Men
Short hair is the easiest way to look sharp with minimal effort. It’s low-maintenance, works in almost any setting and is forgiving of a rushed morning. But “short back and sides” covers a lot of ground. Here are the cuts worth knowing, and how to ask for each.
The crew cut
Short all over, slightly longer on top and graded shorter at the sides and back. Clean, classic and very low-maintenance.
Suits: oval and square faces, thick hair. Ask for: “A number 2 or 3 on the sides, tapered, and about an inch left on top, scissor cut.” Style: a small amount of matte paste, pushed forward or to the side.
The textured crop
A short fringe with a choppy, textured top and faded or tapered sides. Modern and forgiving of thinning hair or a receding hairline.
Suits: most face shapes; great for fine or thinning hair. Ask for: “A mid fade on the sides, with a textured, point-cut crop on top and a short fringe.” Style: clay or sea salt spray, worked through with your fingers.
The classic taper
Longer on top (5–8cm) with sides gradually tapering towards the neck. Smart enough for the office, relaxed enough for the weekend.
Suits: oval, long and square faces. Ask for: “A classic scissor taper on the sides and back, leaving enough length on top to style back or to the side.” Style: a light pomade or cream for a natural shine, or matte product for texture.
The buzz cut
One length all over with clippers. The ultimate low-effort cut — confident and clean.
Suits: strong jawlines and well-shaped heads. Ask for: “A number 2 all over” (or number 3 for a softer look), with a tidy neckline. Style: none. Just moisturise your scalp and wear sunscreen.
The Ivy League
A longer crew cut, long enough on top to part neatly. Preppy, polished and timeless.
Suits: oval and square faces, medium-thick hair. Ask for: “A crew cut with enough length on top to side part — around 3–5cm.” Style: a light pomade and a comb.
Talking to your barber
Bring a photo — ideally of someone with a similar hair type to yours. Say how much time you want to spend styling it each morning. And book your next appointment on the way out: short cuts look best when refreshed every three to four weeks.
A great haircut is the one accessory you wear every day. Pair it with a proper body grooming routine and you’re most of the way there.
