What to Look For in a Linen Blazer
A linen blazer is the answer to almost every warm-weather dress code: weddings, garden parties, smart dinners, the office in July. It’s cool, breathable and has a relaxed elegance nothing else matches. But linen is unforgiving of poor construction. Here’s how we assess one.
The fabric
Weight
Look for around 230–300 g/m² (roughly 7–9 oz). Too light and the jacket collapses and creases into a rag; too heavy and you lose the point of wearing linen.
Blend
Pure linen breathes best and creases most — which is part of its charm. Linen-cotton blends crease a little less and feel softer. Linen-wool blends drape beautifully and recover well. Avoid blends with a high synthetic content; they trap heat.
The construction
- Unstructured or half-lined. A full lining and heavy canvas defeat the purpose. Look for a jacket with minimal padding in the shoulder and lining only through the upper back and sleeves.
- Soft shoulder. A natural, unpadded shoulder suits linen’s relaxed character.
- Patch pockets. More casual than flapped pockets and in keeping with the fabric.
- Real horn or corozo buttons. Plastic buttons cheapen the look immediately.
The fit
The shoulder seam should end where your shoulder does. With the top button fastened, the jacket should close without pulling into an X. Sleeves should show about 1cm of shirt cuff. The hem should roughly cover your seat. Linen relaxes as you wear it, so if in doubt, buy the closer fit.
Made-to-measure has become accessible, and it’s particularly worthwhile for linen, where a precise fit stops the fabric from looking sloppy.

Styling it
Wear it with a white or blue linen shirt, or a fine-knit polo. Pair with cream chinos, lightweight wool trousers or dark denim. Loafers or suede desert boots finish the look; white sneakers make it more casual.
Our verdict criteria
A good linen blazer should feel light on the shoulders, move with you, and look better after a day of wear, not worse. Creases are fine; a jacket that loses its shape is not. Judge it on shoulder, fabric weight and buttons — the three things that can’t be fixed after you buy it.
